To be eligible to become a Canadian citizen one must:

• Be a permanent resident of Canada
• Physically present in Canada for 3 out of the last 5 years
• Filed your taxes in Canada
• Pass a test about Canada, your rights, and your responsibilities
• Prove your language skills

There are potentially different requirements if one is a minor (under 18 years old) or elderly (over 54 years of age). There may also methods to waive certain requirements for Canadian citizenship because of exceptional circumstances.
